40th Beardiversary!

40th Beardiversary!
December 27, 2016 11:52AM
I was out for a post-Christmas hike today in Tucson Mountain Park, and took a couple photos to celebrate my 40th Beardiversary. At age 19, on Christmas 1976, I stopped shaving, and haven't been bare-faced since then.

Not much change since last year; probably a tiny big more grey creeping in. I trim lightly every six months or so to keep it from being too thin at the bottom, and long ago gave up home for extreme density or extreme terminal length. I try to make the most of what I was given, and hope you all do as well. May your new year be a furry one!

You've got me beat by three years... I started my beard on New Years Day, 1979.
It looks GREAT on you!

Thank you Mike and thank you Karter! I feel like it's quite a milestone. It only seems like a little while ago that I passed the point where I had been bearded for longer than I'd been not bearded.

I suspect that only a small fraction of bearded men have grown their beard out once and only once like I did. Prior to Christmas 1976, the most I'd let my beard grow was once for about 5 days when I'd gone on a camping trip the previous summer. Other than that, I was shaving every day or two once I'd started shaving. While I missed all the experimentation I could have done with various styles, I never wanted to go through what I felt was a very awkward first 4 to 6 weeks more than once. Lacking great follicle density, I didn't like the sparse look I had going on, and found the solution was to grow longer. So, in all the years since, I've never trimmed shorter than about three or four inches.

Tom, you're way ahead of me in terms of picking one style and sticking to it. I've been all over the place with my beard - long, short, goatee, and even a few times I went solo mustache. Right now I'm wearing my beard quite long, but I'm getting restless for a change again...

really going to mess with that masterpiece of yours.

Hello, Tom!

Happy 40th beardiversary! That is truly an impressive number.

You wear your beard well; I mean that. You offer some great advice about
making the most of what you've got to work with. I'm sort of in the same
boat as you. I had a length goal in mind, which honestly, from where I'm
at now, would only require about three more inches of growth. But my
beard just ain't havin' it. I seem to have reached terminal length, which
used to bum me out. Actually, it still bums me out from time to time if I'm
being perfectly honest -- though for the most part, I don't think about it
much. So like you said, I just try to make the most of what I've got now.

About every 12 weeks, I ever so slightly give the bottom of my beard
a straight-edge cut with my electric hair clipper, just to even things out. I
make sure I'm removing the absolute bare minimum.

Anyhow, congrats again on the milestone!
